Roanoke City Refuses To Get Off The Gravy Train

Property taxes have remained relatively high over the years since the recession. Depending on where in the city, property values have dropped  20 - 50 % while the city has kept the property tax rates the same.

The city was reprimanded by the state and forced to comply with state regulations which lead them to slowly lower the tax assessed values of a great deal of the city. Property taxes were never lowered anywhere near where they should have been but the slight tax decrease has lead to a situation where the city government is underfunded and can’t continue to pay for their ever increasing expansion.

Roanoke City then put the feelers out to see how the citizens felt about an increased property tax rate so the local government could still get all of the money they that they want. They see the citizens as a pool of never ending wealth that they can tap into any time they desire.

The response to their test was extremely negative. After all Roanoke City already has the highest property taxes in this part of Virginia.  They found that the people were not in favor of increasing the property tax rate.

So now the city has decided that they are going to take serious consideration to imposing a new fee requiring trash pickup to be paid for by each house. Trash pickup will no longer be included in your property taxes. This decision follows the recent rain tax that the city imposed on it’s citizens. Which was proceeded by the meals tax a few years ago.

City Manager Chris Morrill is suggesting a $60 to $84 dollar per year charge per big blue container. I hope you don’t have any multifamily houses with several trash cans. This will give the city millions more to continue their expansion. One of many other unintended results of their actions will be increases in low income housing rents which further exacerbates the homeless issues that Roanoke City is dealing with.

They are also considering raising the meals tax again and or adding an additional motor vehicle license tax. The city council is still kicking it around but all of the city councilmen and women are planning for an increase in several different areas of taxation. But want to do it incrementally so they can leave room to raise all of them again in the future for continued expansion.

They are having a public hearing on it on April 23rd but won’t have a vote on it until May. It’s important to them to do this to the citizens slowly, allowing time for you to adjust to these additional taxes before hiking them up continually throughout the future as needed.

There is a point in time where the citizens will stand up and say NO. Is Roanoke City there yet? Or do the citizens feel hopeless like they can’t do anything about it anyway so they will just go along with anything that is planned for them by the great leaders?

There are many ways to gradually decrease the size of government that don’t include firing or laying off a single government employee. The city government has ballooned to such a tremendous size that there are continually loads of jobs being refilled after employees retire or change positions. These open positions don’t have to be refilled. The currant local administration does not like this method of decreasing government as they currently have no intentions of slowing down.

Have a look below at the currant list of positions for hire by the city. How many of them would you notice was not refilled? Is it absolutely necessary to hire another Code Enforcer and Building Inspector? 21 on staff isn’t enough? I see they now have money from the new rain tax for a Stormwater Engineer. a Stormwater Cost Technician, a Stormwater Water Quality Administrator and several Stormwater Maintenance Technicians. More workers for the Human Services entitlement programs, etc, etc, etc…
